I was making toast the other day and realized something. A toaster toasts bread way better when it just recently toasted bread. The bread is toasted more brown compared to the first attempt. This is because it was conditioned, its coils were still hot. It took the first attempt to get the toaster used to toasting bread and by the second attempt it cooked mighty fine. Now if you unplug the toaster for an hour you got to start back all over again to get to peak performance.
My point is if you are constantly conditioning yourself and practicing, experimenting and perfecting you are going to stay at the top of your game. Whether it be playing basketball or golfing or even writing. Its not just with physical things it with any and everything you do.
The reason why this is true is because our bodies function with modes, kinda like muscle memory. There are various modes we use daily and there is one for each activity we do. When you drive you are in the “driving mode”, When you get to the golf range your mind instantly goes into “golfing mode”. Every mode there is a set of directions. These directions let your body know what to do as well as your mind. The more you stay in certain modes the better your going to do in them. This is because your focus is always towards it and Its still fresh in your brain.
I notice this when i write. Writing is something I try and do every day, I do this because it keeps me in the writing mode and it has the toaster effect. My coils are always hot so my mind can easily get to writing at the touch of a keyboard or pen.
You know what they say “Once you learn how to ride a bike you never forget.”, That is true in a sense but I can guarantee if you pick up a bike without riding in years, you aren’t going to be riding like you were when you were a kid (as far as riding really fast and doing tricks). Perhaps in your high-school days you may have been able to throw a mean spiral but your spiral isn’t going to be as nice picking a football up today, that is unless you condition yourself by staying in your “football” mode and continue practicing!
Now if you neglect certain activities, you and your modes are going to get rusty and it will take some time to get back fine tuned and all. You will probably be able to do X but you aren’t going to be as tuned in and perfected as you once did, until you practice getting back into your various modes.
Some things you neglect take longer for you to get back being good at then others but the key is to stay in modes and you will always be on top of your game! My sister called me between writing this and it took me a little bit to get back in the writing mode again.
Discussion: What are your current most used modes and what are some modes you’d like to get back into?
